Heavy Metal

Directed by
Gerald Potterton, John Bruno & John Halas

Heavy MetalAfter successfully bringing the National Lampoon brand to the screen with 1978’s ANIMAL HOUSE, producer Ivan Reitman set his sights on doing the same for Lampoon sister publication Heavy Metal, a boundary-pushing comics magazine introduced in 1977 and sourced in part from French counterpart Métal Hurlant. Featuring a hit soundtrack, inspired work from multiple animation houses and a voice cast including SCTV stars John Candy, Eugene Levy and Joe Flaherty, the resulting anthology HEAVY METAL became a defining cult hit. With the magazine due to relaunch this Spring following a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign, Central Cinema and our pals at Nirvana Comics are celebrating with a limited engagement of this essential comics-to-screen classic.

Adventures from deep space to futuristic New York, and beyond. Each world and story is dominated by the presence of the Loch’nar — the sum of all evils manifest as a glowing green sphere whose power infects all times, all galaxies, all dimensions. To some, it appears as treasure, a green jewel they must possess. Others worship it as a god. Few escape it. Even in death and through death its powers continue. From war to war and world to world it seems invincible.

“A genuinely outrageous and occasionally brilliant coupling of American animation and classic early-Eighties heavy metal.” – Austin Chronicle
