Waiting For Guffman

Waiting For Guffman

Directed by
Christopher Guest

Waiting for GuffmanEmpowered by the success of his 1984 co-creation THIS IS SPINAL TAP, Christopher Guest set out to repeat its improv-based mockumentary magic by putting together a troupe of ringers for one of the funniest “let’s put on a show” comedies of all time, headlined in part by the inspired pairing of Fred Willard and our March series tributee Catherine O’Hara.

As the town of Blaine, Missouri approaches its sesquicentennial, there’s only one way to celebrate: with a musical revue called “Red, White and Blaine.” Hoping the show will be his ticket back to Broadway, impresario Corky St. Clair (Christopher Guest) rounds up a cast of enthusiastic but untalented locals (Eugene Levy, Fred Willard, Catherine O’Hara) to perform his masterwork. But, when Corky reveals that theater agent Mort Guffman will attend the opening, things really kick into high gear.

“Attention is paid not simply to funny characters and punch lines, but to small nudges at human nature.” – Roger Ebert
