November 17 is Martin Scorsese’s birthday, and to celebrate we’re getting a head start on our upcoming Scorsese film series with his defining work, influential and misunderstood to this day.
A mentally unstable veteran (Robert De Niro) works as a nighttime taxi driver in New York City, where the perceived decadence and sleaze fuels his urge for violent action by attempting to liberate a presidential campaign worker (Cybill Shepard) and an underage prostitute (Jodie Foster).
“No other film has ever dramatized urban indifference so powerfully; at first, here, it’s horrifyingly funny, and then just horrifying.” – Pauline Kael
“Taxi Driver is a brilliant nightmare and like all nightmares it doesn’t tell us half of what we want to know.” – Roger Ebert
