Spike Lee’s momentous, crowd-pleasing biopic of the controversial Civil Rights leader screens ONE NIGHT ONLY as part of our “Hard To Be Free” July film series, closing out a three-night run of American epics with JFK and THE NEW WORLD.

Serving an extended prison sentence, small-time gangster Malcolm Little (Denzel Washington) is transformed by the teachings of cult figure Elijah Muhammad and gains rapid prominence within the Nation of Islam upon his release. As his profile grows against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement, the man rechristened “Malcolm X” finds himself beset by white supremacy, religious strife, and the ever-shifting status quo of the 1960s.
