Knoxferatu 2019: Häxan
The annual Knoxferatu event (a special Halloween-season silent film/live score program curated by our Enjoy The Silents collaborator Kelly Robinson) gets the coven back together for its fourth year with 1922’s iconoclastic Häxan: Witchcraft Through The Ages (featuring a live score by local composer Wil Wright at both dates) as well a preceding program of witchy silent shorts (accompanied Alexia Pantanizopoulos on Wednesday and Très Daugherte on Saturday.)
Tickets are just $10, or included free with a Knoxville Horror Film Fest festival pass.
A hybrid of documentary and fiction, Häxan explores the history of witchcraft, demonology and satanism. It shows representations of evil in a variety of ancient and medieval artworks, offers vignettes illustrating a number of superstitious practices and presents a narrative about the persecution of a woman accused of witchcraft. The film ends by suggesting that the modern science of psychology offers important insight into the beliefs and practices of the past.
