Barry Lyndon
When a planned post-CLOCKWORK ORANGE Napoleon biopic hit the skids, Staney Kubrick pivoted years of research and stylistic ideas into adapting William Makepeace Thackeray’s picaresque about a cousin-lusting scoundrel who stumbles and deceives his way into wealth and prominence in 18th-century Europe. Though its length and period setting have often kept it out of the conversation Kubrick-wise, the resulting film is among his finest work: painstakingly detailed, subtly hilarious, and absoutely stunning to look at in its 50th anniversary 4K restoration.
An Irish rogue (Ryan O’Neal) uses his cunning and wit to work his way up the social classes of 18th century England, transforming himself from the humble Redmond Barry into the noble Barry Lyndon.
“This is one of Kubrick’s best, not gimmicky or arch, not somnambulant or mannered, just finely detailed, measured, richly photographed and, at every step of the way, entertaining and interesting.” – San Francisco Chronicle
