May Is For Monsters!

May Is For Monsters!

We’ve been having fun with some loose themes lately at Central Cinema… The Uninvited, Cat Video Fest, and Roar went pretty well together, not to mention the Frank / Donnie Darko “Masked Guys Named Frank” pairing. But we’ve also had requests for more extended series a la “Noirvember” and January’s Stanley Kubrick celebration, so when the offhand idea “May Is For Monsters” came up we stopped everything else we were doing and shouted monster movies at each other for half an hour. We’ve been teasing this for a few weeks, but we’re happy to present the full-ish lineup for May…
NOIRvember Approaches!

NOIRvember Approaches!

First of all we want to thank all our horror fans for a stellar October… and apologies to those who don’t find the scary stuff as essential as we do this time of year! To make up for it we’ve decided to do something special for November as well, drawn from a consistent request we’ve gotten over the past year: November is NOIRVEMBER at Central Cinema! As originally defined by French film critics, film noir most specifically refers to a loose canon of postwar American dramas that blended a stark, shadowy aesthetic with seedy stories of moral terror, usually involving…
October is jam-packed at Central Cinema!

October is jam-packed at Central Cinema!

So, big surprise: we went hard on horror movies this month. Central Cinema grew out of the Knoxville Horror Film Festival (celebrating its tenth year October 17-21) and we always figured our Octobers would be stacked with the scary stuff, but this is honestly kind of ridiculous. First off, we're presenting a series of Universal Monsters double features: The Wolf Man & Creature from the Black Lagoon run back to back October 4-7, followed by Dracula & The Invisible Man October 11-14 and Frankenstein & Bride of Frankenstein October 25-28. Beyond those black & white favorites, we'll be digging into the contemporary horror canon with more double feature…
Central Cinema Celebrates John Landis September 21-23!

Central Cinema Celebrates John Landis September 21-23!

Hey Central Cinema fans! We want to thank everyone for a great first month, during which time we’ve covered a lot of ground movie-wise and gotten a slightly better idea of what sort of stuff y’all are into. But we’re still experimenting with formats, and we’re particularly excited about this coming week’s program. On September 23 our friends at the American Genre Film Archive are celebrating Art House Theater Day by releasing director John Landis’ debut feature SCHLOCK back into the wild. Written and directed by Landis when he was just 21 years old, the low budget creature-feature sendup (rated…
Knoxville Horror Film Fest X Festival Passes On Sale Now!

Knoxville Horror Film Fest X Festival Passes On Sale Now!

Hey KHFF fans! We’ve been a little quiet so far this year because we’ve been busy launching Central Cinema (the site you now find yourself on) but we’re excited to finally share expanded details on what we’ve got planned for our TENTH ANNUAL FESTIVAL October 18-21. We’ve managed to grow bit by bit over the years, but for 2018 we’re making our biggest leaps ever. We’ve expanded to an extra night on Thursday. We’re bringing our friends from the Shock Waves podcast to town for live events. And in addition to an overload of rad shorts, we’ve booked more exciting…
Adopt-An-Arm Is Back… Act Quick!

Adopt-An-Arm Is Back… Act Quick!

UPDATE: Our custom armrests are officially sold out! Thank you so much to everyone who participated in this opportunity... we plan to install our seating early next week, and can't wait to see and share how it all looks. ORIGINAL POST: We've been blown away by how many people have contributed to our GoFundMe page over the last year, but without a doubt our favorite period of the campaign was when we introduced our "Adopt-An-Arm" project this spring... and we're excited to announce that our final batch of customized armrests are available to film fans who want to help give…
Central Cinema Lineup Announcement

Central Cinema Lineup Announcement

It’s just been just short of a year since we announced the Central Cinema project, and as I write this we’re roughly a month out from opening. (Rest assured we’re as eager to set a date as you are to hear one, but we aren’t looking to tempt fate.) And since we launched there’s one question we’ve heard more than anything else, and never been able to confidently answer: “What’s the first movie you’re going to show? So in lieu of an opening date, here’s fourteen answers to that question. You can find a listing of the announced films below,…
